Microsoft Utility Summit in Prague 27, 28 March 2008 Powering Success in Utilities!
Industry leaders from all parts of Europe, Russia and as far away as Brazil met in Prague to discuss the critical issues facing the Utility and Power industries. Sixty-five customers attended this exclusive event focusing on critical market drivers including Climate Change, Regulatory Uncertainty, Resource Adequacy and Operational Efficiency, Workforce Challenge, Globalization & Price Pressures and Energy Technology Consumerization.
Summit Highlights:
Daniel Dobbeni President and CEO of Elia System Operator and Chairman of ETSO (the Association of the European Transmission System Operators) kicked off the Summit by discussing the challenges and opportunities his organization faces challenges such as lack of transmission access where the wind farms are being developed, the potentially conflicting investment motivations of the Utilities vs. Generation, one country vs. another and how the EU commission may need to act to get the Transmission System Operators the necessary business case to drive investment to meet the impending gap between supply and demand.
Creating the Utility of the future to deal with these critical market drivers is a major challenge for Utilities Worldwide. Larry Cochrane, Microsoft WW Utilities Industry Strategist and Architect discussed how Utilities can position themselves to successfully deal with critical industry market drivers using the Microsoft Utility point of view for the future with concrete examples of how Microsoft technologies and solutions can and are being applied to mitigate these critical issues.

Innovation, agility and adaptability where key messages throughout the Summit. Soumitra Dutta, Dean of External Relations, Roland Berger Professor of Business and Technology INSEAD, discussed how Innovation is a critical driver for business success and how is influenced by both national contexts and organizational leadership. Don Richardson, Microsoft Director, Global Innovation Industry Strategy, re-enforced Soumitra Dutta's message in his discussion around Driving Business Transformation in Utilities through a Formal Approach to Innovation. Don discussed the business challenges and examined the approaches to achieve tangible and measurable results through applying formal process to innovation which included an interactive unified communications demonstration using the Roundtable Camera.

Resource Adequacy, Operational Efficiency and Asset Management is a key concern to Utilities Worldwide as the demand for power continues to outstrip supply. David Cox, Senior Manager at Accenture discussed the acute power supply problems in South Africa that is resulting in blackouts and how this scenario could repeat itself in other areas of the world. David presented how a MOSS based solution (Fleet Performance Systems) integrated with technologies from partners OSIsoft and SmartSignal is helping Eskom optimize aging generation portfolios and at the same time provide the foundation for a knowledge management system that helps Utilities deal with the aging workforce and skills shortages. Maria Martin and Miguel Chavero of the Spanish Utility Iberdrola discussed how they are maximizing profits and increasing performance of generation assets using SQL Server and SharePoint with solutions from partner OSIsoft. Pavel Pestryakov, Deputy Director General of Information Technology for the Russia power company OGK-4, discussed his company's spin-off from the United Energy System and how OGK-4 had to quickly construct new business processes and implement a new ERP system based on Dynamics AX.

Closing:
The Summit brought together an exclusive group of 73 attendees from some of the most important utility companies in the world and Microsoft. The two days we've spent together were very valuable with strong content, insights, advice, networking and some great evening events!
Our goal was to share Microsoft's thought leadership and vision in Utilities and provide concrete examples of how Microsoft and its partners are helping Utilities achieve business success today and positioning them for the future. The feedback from customers was that the agenda, logistics and venue were excellent and customers valued the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and the event must be repeated! This Summit may best summarized by the comments of more than one attendee that said "I couldn't believe I was at a Microsoft conference, all the presentations where about industry issues and solutions not products".
I want to thank everyone that participated in this event including Larry Cochrane, Larry Kuhl, Alfredo Cristoforetti, Irena Brifordova and the Microsoft account teams that helped us with recruit customer speakers. Also, a very special thanks to Maria Jahnova and her team who helped organize and execute this spectacular event!
